Not all fossils look perfect in the field. ⛏️ A good-sized fossil stingray that we discovered while pulling columns of rock down with the backhoe. A rock rolled down, broke open to reveal the end of a stingray tail including the barbs. It took several hours to extract the other pieces by hand which were in a zone of fractured rock. This is one of my favorite fossils we found at the Fossil Lake Safari quarry last season. It's the upper half of a caiman skull, surrounded by several fossil fish. It was found just before we opened for the season last year on a beautiful volcanic ash layer. It had to be meticulously prepared under a microscope, including transferring parts of some teeth from one side of the rock to the other, but the results were beautiful.
