This is how the weft threads get into the warp. When weaving Harris tweed on my loom, it uses a Rapier to pick up the threads and carry them through the warp. The older looms used shuttles, where a small amount of weft was wound inside each shuttle. Then when that ran out the weaver had to stop and change it. With this type of loom, it works straight off the cones of yarn, meaning I can weave for much longer without stopping to change yarn. #loommechanics #weavinghistory #madeintheOuterHebrides

The weft are the threads that I weave into the warp, creating the woven fabric. The weft goes across the width of the fabric and starts off on cones or bobbans (tall plastic tubes full of yarn, also called bobbins but I like the bobban name as its how I've heard other weavers pronounce it). The yarn gets set up on a special table, with places for 6 different cones/bobbans, as 6 colours of weft is the maximum the loom can take. It comes off cone/bobban, up to the top of the table, through a hole

How does the weft thread get through the warp? To make the fabric, the weft thread has to be woven through the warp threads, and this is how my loom does it. The older Hattersley loom uses shuttles, where the yarn sits inside and that takes the weft threads though, but my loom (and most that Harris Tweed is now woven on) works in a different way. This loom is a Rapier loom, the Rapier being the little metal thing you can see in the pictures. It picks the weft thread up, holds it tight in its hea

This is what puts the weft into the warp. Most of the looms used to weave Harris Tweed (the type I have, there are a few older styles still in use that use boat shuttles) use a single pick Rapier to put the weft in. The Rapier (the little metal thing you can see moving in the video) runs on a tape, through guides across the width of the loom. It picks up the weft, trapping it in a sprung head, and cuts it free on a blade. It then pulls it through the warp threads (half of which are up, half down
