Is Sycamore wood good for building with? - Homesteading Forum
Oct 17, 2008 · Sycamore has it uses. It has low acid which means that it is a good choice under roofing because it doesn't rust nails. Quarter sawn it is a beutiful furniture wood. It does warp and is not rot resistant. Just to add to what just sawing wrote, sycamore does rot quickly in contact with soil, or if it stays wet.

Those have round seed balls and opposite spaced leaves. It is a member of the Maple (Acer) genus. Those have opposite spaced leaves and branches and winged seeds.

Cutting Sycamore roots?? - Homesteading Forum
Apr 27, 2011 · Sycamores do not have a tap root. All of their roots run laterally near the top of the ground. Sycamores are useful in stabilizing creek banks. Often a stream will eventually undercut them but the laterals will continue to support the tree. If the trees could be undercut by the creek I'd leave the roots alone.

Jun 20, 2006 · Red Cedar is real good. Post Oak is good (better if pretreated where wood is below ground with used oil) Walnut dark only good. Red Oak if soaked in used oil for a time is OK. If will pay you to have a sawyer square the post. This gives a smoth surface to work with and the sap wood is where bugs attack.

Nov 24, 2016 · Things you'll need: Grafting Wax, Tree Wrap, Bug spray, gloves. Remove loose bark around the damaged area. If it is loose, it more than likely won't reattach, and will trap moisture underneath and develop mold. Apply a grafting wax to the damaged area to seal it from the elements and prevent mold.

Feb 12, 2022 · Walnut wood is excellent for furniture and rifle stocks. Henry uses black walnut wood for rifle stocks. IME, walnut is an excellent firewood. It is heavier than maple or sycamore but it burns hotter. A couple years ago we used mostly walnut to heat our house. Kiamichi Kid, Digitalis, Snowfan and 1 other person.

Apr 25, 2014 · We have sycamore, some ash, wild cherry, pecan, elm. black locust and black walnut. A few persimmon and a LOT of river birch. I burn oak if it is down, black walnut when it is in the way, pecan if I must cull a tree, ash when I can get to it.
