AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - A recount in Maine’s Second Congressional District race started in Augusta Monday. Elections officials are counting the ballots by hand. Those from Austin Theriault’s campaign requested the recount and will be covering the cost.

AUGUSTA, Maine — A recount is set to begin Monday in Maine's 2nd Congressional District race. The race went to a ranked-choice runoff after neither candidate surpassed 50 percent of first-place votes on Election Day, necessitating the shipment of ballots to the state capital for a ranked-choice voting tabulation.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden defeated Republican Austin Theriault by roughly 2,700 votes following a ranked-choice runoff on Nov. 15. Theriault's campaign immediately filed a recount request because the margin between the two was roughly 0.

The state does not require a deposit for a recount if the margin of victory is 1% or less in Congressional races.

Austin Theriault requested the recount after losing the race to Rep. Jared Golden by 2,706 votes, or less than 1% of votes cast.
