Plans to pedestrianise London’s Oxford Street have been announced
After decades of rumours and blocked attempts at making London 's Oxford Street a car-free zone, it looks like the plans could finally be going ahead. On Tuesday, 17 September 2024, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced in an Instagram post that the government is “announcing exciting new plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street”.

The council said it already developed a ready to go £90m plan, half-paid for by landowners, to deliver wider footways and reduced congestion. But crucially their plan would maintain direct bus access to Oxford Street which they said was important to shoppers, workers, disabled, elderly, and those on low incomes.
