Catastrophic flooding struck central Texas on Friday as the Guadalupe River surged by more than 20 to 26 feet within 90 minutes, causing widespread devastation and forcing mass evacuations in Texas Hill Country. At least 80 people have been killed in the floods while others remain missing or displaced and more than 850 people required rescuing.

In Kerr County, home to youth camps in the Texas Hill Country, searchers have found the bodies of 68 people, including 28 children, Sheriff Larry Leitha said Sunday afternoon. Fatalities in nearby counties brought the total number of deaths to 79 as of Sunday evening.

As of early Monday, 81 people died across six counties. Sixty-eight died in Kerr County alone, 40 were adults and 21 were children. Authorities said about 850 people had been rescued or evacuated. There are still 10 Mystic Camp campers and one camp counselor missing.
