Starship is tasked with carrying two astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface of the Moon as part of NASA's Artemis 3 mission.

A braking burn maneuver using two HLS Raptor engines will then ease the spacecraft into its landing. Given Starship’s height, astronauts will need to utilize a specially designed elevator to lower them and their equipment onto the moon, at which point they can make history as the first humans to return to the lunar surface in over 55 years.

NASA says that SpaceX will demonstrate an uncrewed landing of Starship on the Moon before the crewed Artemis 3 mission in 2026. The Starship Human Landing System (HLS), as it is called, will measure about 50 metres tall. But there's a lot of work left on both Starship and Orion before this could happen.
