For most of the last decade, opposing coaches have faced the nearly impossible task of defending South Carolina’s fearsome low post game. But on Sunday, the shoe is on the other foot. Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks face the daunting task of trying to contain the Bruins’ punishing post players.

Gone was the overall 43-game winning streak. Done was the run of 33 consecutive road victories. And the No. 1 ranking it’s held for 23 consecutive polls will disappear Monday. “This is what we usually do to teams,” coach Dawn Staley said. “We were on the receiving end of it.”

The South Carolina's women's basketball team was defeated 77-62 by UCLA Sunday afternoon, ending its 43-game winning streak. The loss was South Carolina's first regular season loss since January 2021.

South Carolina, the nation’s top-ranked team and defending national champion, experienced defeat Sunday for the first time in 43 games. Fifth-ranked UCLA stopped the streak by dominating all four quarters for a 77-62 victory in front of a sold-out 13,659 at Pauley Pavilion.

Te-Hina Paopao scored 18 points and Tessa Johnson scored 14 for the Gamecocks, whose road winning streak was third-longest in Division I history. It was the first time UCLA took down a No. 1 team in school history,
