Lawmakers in the Texas House and Senate can begin filing bills for the 2025 session on Tuesday, giving a first glimpse into topics they want to tackle.

The Legislature meets biennially, meaning lawmakers have had a full year to brainstorm ideas for new legislation. Only a few hundred bills are passed each year by both the GOP-led House and Senate, meaning the vast majority of bills filed Tuesday will ultimately fall by the wayside.

Members of the Texas House and Senate filed over 1,500 bills on education, abortion, immigration and more to mark the unofficial start of the 89th legislative session. The Legislature convenes in Austin on Jan.
