The new plan to avert a government shutdown comes after the House rejected Speaker Johnson's opening gambit in the funding fight last week.

The short-term bill is expected to get a vote on the House floor this week as Congress faces a Sept. 30 shutdown deadline.

Speaker Mike Johnson said the House will vote this week on a three-month stopgap funding bill to keep the federal government open through Dec. 20.
