Sheila Chepkirui took the tape Sunday morning in the women’s New York City Marathon, and she did it in the most stunning of fashions: outkicking Hellen Obiri and slamming the door on Obiri’s legendary past two years.

Nageeye had run the New York race three times before, with his previous best finish being third in 2022. The winner that year was Kenya's Evans Chebet, and Chebet almost secured another victory this weekend as he and Nageeye were battling it out heading into Central Park.

On Sunday morning at the New York City Marathon, Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui surged in the homestretch to clinch the win in 2:24:35. Chepkirui held off a fierce challenge from defending champion Hellen Obiri, who finished just seconds behind in 2:24:49. The podium was completed by 41-year-old marathon veteran Vivian Cheruiyot, in 2:25:21.
