France was thrown into fresh political turmoil on Monday after Prime Minister François Bayrou and his minority government collapsed after losing a crucial confidence vote in parliament. MPs voted against him in a 364–194 vote,

The left wing Labour MP Richard Burgon, who served on Jeremy Corbyn's front bench, described it as "the mother of all stitch ups " and later added "despite the stitch up, Labour members deserve a Left candidate on the ballot."
