Normally, Gus should weigh about 100 pounds, but when he was found on that Australian beach, he only weighed 51 pounds. In just a few weeks, he's gained 7 pounds and continues to put on weight. Gus was released back into the Southern Ocean to start the long trip back home just days ago. We're all hoping he makes it!

Gus, the emperor penguin that swam from Antarctica to Australia, was released 20 days after he was found waddling on a tourist beach.

An Emperor penguin that ended up on an Australian beach has been released. Hopefully, the bird can now find its way back home in Antarctica. The penguin spent 20 days being looked after by a local wildlife carer before being released from a parks and wildlife service vessel off the southern coast of Western Australia Wednesday.

The emperor penguin, dubbed Gus, had somehow swam over 2,000 miles from his icy home and was found on a sun-drenched beach in Denmark, Western Australia, earlier this month.
