The Colombian navy has intercepted a semi-submersible vessel packed with cocaine in the Pacific Ocean, as part of an operation in which hundreds of arrests have been made. It said the vessel had enough fuel to sail to Australia, on what was believed to be a new smuggling route, and maps indicated that is where it was headed.

The Colombian Navy announced it intercepted six “narco subs” containing more than $8 billion worth of drugs in an international mission involving 62 nations, of which the United States was included, that was conducted over a six-week span.

Authorities from dozens of countries seized 225 metric tons of cocaine in a six-week mega-operation where they unearthed a new Pacific trafficking route from South America to Australia, the Colombian Navy said Wednesday.

Colombian authorities have struck a major blow against international drug trafficking. In a six-week operation involving 62 countries, 1,400 tonnes of drugs worth around £6.7 billion were seized. A particular success was the interception of six 'narco-submarines' capable of carrying up to ten tonnes of cocaine.

The operation resulted in the confiscation of more than 1,400 tonnes of drugs, including 225 tonnes of cocaine and 1,000 tonnes of marijuana.
